Meet NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, an advanced survey observatory built to reshape our understanding of the cosmos. The mission pairs a broad field of view with keen infrared vision, enabling it to examine immense, deep sections of the sky much more efficiently than many earlier space telescopes. By charting the universe across enormous regions and tracking how its contents evolve, Roman will help astronomers address some of modern science’s most important questions, including what dark matter and dark energy are, how the cosmos has expanded over time, and how common exoplanets are around other stars. Because each Roman survey will cover such a substantial portion of the universe, the mission will also provide virtually endless possibilities for astronomers conducting many kinds of additional research. Its observations could uncover new worlds, faraway supernovae, and uncommon transient events, while supporting studies of objects in our outer solar system, growing black holes, star formation, and billions of galaxies. With its sweeping perspective and extraordinary sensitivity, almost nothing will lie beyond Roman’s capabilities.
