Steve Priest

Stephen Norman Priest was born february 23, 1948 in Hayes, Middlesex.

At the age of 18 Steve was into the music business as a member of various bands, "Countdowns" and "The Army" and in 1968 he joined The Sweet - or Sweetshop which was the name in the beginning.

Steve says:"I had a band together called The Allies in New York in the early eighties. We were a three piece band and very good. I wrote many songs with Marco Delmar including one called Talk to Me that was in a movie called Fast Food. I also co wrote a song with David Arkenstone called Little Angel that was on a Quiet Riot album/cd"

When Sweet in 1979 became a trio, Steve took over the leadvocals.

About 10 years ago he wrote a book called "Are you ready Steve" where he describes parts of what happened and how was The Sweet days, a very good book with a lot of interesting reading.

Steve now lives in the Los Angeles area and is not doing much musically, but maybe one day his work will see the light of the day.

From Guitar Worlds Bass Guitar, April/May 2004 edition

Another glam-era adherent to the cult of the Gibson Thunderbird. Priest developed quite a cult following of his own as the bassist for Sweet. A total cut-up with a penchant for outrageous costumes - he once appeared on British TV in full Nazi regalia and a Hitler moustache - Priest gave the band its ironic sense of humor, and his ad-libbed, Curly Howard-like vocal interjectionson hits like "Ballroom Blitz" and "Blockbuster" were nearly as infectious as the songs themselves.

"Sweet is one of those bands that never really got the credit they deserved, they were Queen before there was Queen. Steve Priest was probably one of the most talented guys in that band, but as a player he stayed with the band, right in the pocket. You had to be careful with a band like Sweet, because they could be so tongue-in-cheek that you'd actually take them seriously.

But listen, you've got to go onstage in a Nazi uniform at least once in your career!"

Thanks Steve.
